Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 84, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 27 June 1899 — More Coal In Walker Township, [ARTICLE]
More Coal In Walker Township,
A year or two ago The Republican noted the finding of coal in small quantities and in a fragmentary condition, in Wheatfield or Walker township. We now learn that some more coal has been found in'the same broken condition, in Walker township. We take it that there is no occasion for anyone being excited over this coal find. There is not enough of it to amount to anything. We think if an expert geologist, well informed on the geology of northwestern Indiana were consulted about the matter he would say that in the days before the glacial eia that at least a thin layer of coal bearing rocks, reached far enough north to cover what is now Jasper county, but that these were all swept away during the glacial period, leaving however, here and there, small quantities of broken coal. This last discovery was made in digging a ditch on Warren Springer’s big ranch. We learn further, that Mr. Springer is preparing to bore a deep experimental well on his tract, looking for gas or oil. Which is all right, for Mr. Springer has plenty of wealth to spend in boring the earth if he wants to. He is much more likely to add to his wealth, however, *by digging diiches and raising corn than by boring for oil or gas.
