Obituary.

Abigail Shaw Kessler died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Hinkle, in Barkley township on Tuesday evening, June 20, 1899 at the advanced age of 82 years, 4 months and 15 days. She was born in Wayne Co., Ind., and removed to Tippecanoe Co., where she was married to George Kessler, April 6, 1837. To thib union were born two children, James 8. who enlisted during the civil war and died in the service; and Mrs. Mary E. Hinkle at whose home the deceased had lived. for over two years. She being the only one of the family left to mourn the loss of a. devoted mother. Her husband preceded her about two years. She removed to Jasper county in the spring of 1845, where she remained until her death. She united with the United Brethren church early in life and lived a consistent Christian. Funeral services were conducted at the residence by Re.v. C. D. Sherrill, pastor of the Brushwood U. B. church, Wednesday June 21, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Prater cemetery, where they were followed by a large number of friends all anxious to show a last tribute of respect to an old and esteemed friend. So one by one the first settlers of our county are passing to their reward.
