. London capitalists intend to bnild a railroad line in Alaska from Norton sound to the Yukon river. Word from the coast says the Vanderbilts are about to complete a line from Salt Lake to Los Angeles. Official notice has been given of the purchase of the St. Louis and Northern Short Line by the Chicago and Alton. It is believed by officials that no change will be made in the present arrangements for transporting United States mail from Chicago weat. The Chicago and Eastern Illinois road is laying eighty-pound steel rails on its north-bound track between Chicago and Danville, 111. Intervening petitions filed in the suit to foreclose the Wisconsin Central Company mortgage were withdrawn in the Milwaukee courts, and the way is cleared for reorganisation. Extensive improvements are to be mads on the Baltimore and Ohio Bailroad between Chicago and Pittsburg. Over fifty bridges will be rebuilt, heavier rails laid and the track doubled in a number of
