Big Families in Germany.
Big families are common io Germany nowadays, and a recent report issued by the Statistical Society of Berlin, concerning one year’s births in that city, should have been enough to liave made tbe Parisians, with their alarmingly low birth-rate, turn green with envy. One wife presented her husband with her twenty-third child, two with their twenty-flrsL one with her twentieth, two their nineteenth, six with their eighteenth, and seventeen with their seventeenth. A large numbr of more youthful mothers are bidding fair to rival these achievements of their elders, for it appears that one young wife, only 23 years old, has become a mother for the ninth time, one aged 21 for the seventh, and one aged 19 for the fifth, while five wives, who have only seen 18 summers, have been so blessed three times, and one, who is but yet 16, is twice a mother.
