It begins to look now ns i < the latest report ot the sale of the Monon railroad to a Vanderbilt -eyndicnto were really true. The sale is treated as a settled fact by Abe city papers aud even the con--servative Indianapolis Journal now cencedes Hie truth of the report, and under the heading, “President Thomas Sells the Monon” has the following: “It now seems settled beyond <Loubt that Samuel Thomas and and others who held the controlling stock of the Monon have sold the property to a New York syndicate headed by the Vanderbilts. The Monon operates 537 miles of road. a large portion of which is in excellent condition. The company has 97 locomotives, 75 passenger cars and 6,487 freight cars, and the rolling stock is in good - condition Samuel Thomas and , l liis friends have controlled the road for eight years. The capital stock of the company is now sl2, 060,000. The change in ownership, it is said will make no change in the official roster, which is looked upon as being a very . competent one.”

A Whole Regiment Coming.

" A whole regiment of soldiers will pass through Rensselaer next Friday, April 28, it being the first time during the war that a whole regiment has passed over the Monon, in one body. It is the 2nd Illinois regiment, and formerly oneof Chicago’s crack regiments, * of the Illinois national guard. The regiment is now at Augusta, ' Georgia. It will come over the old line of the Monon, from Louisville. The regiment is still to remain as part of the Illinois militia, and its U. S. arms having been taken away, its state arms are to be sent to Monon, and the regiment equipped there. This is done in order that the regiment may enter Chicago fully armed jmd equipped, and their home coming is to be made the occasion •of a big demonstration. The regiment is expected to reach Chicago about 1 p. m. Friday, which would bring them to Rensselaer about 10 a. m. The regiment will be in three sections. We are not able to say if any or all of the sections will stop in Rensselaer, but it is not unlikely if at least one or more did. in order to let other trains pass.

Temperance Program.

The semi-monthly meeting of the Rensselaer Union Anti-Saloon League will be held at the Christian church on Thursday evening, April 27th, at 7:30. PROGRAM. Local railroad men are convinced ? that the reported sale of the Monon is this time 8 fact. They believe however that Mr. McDoel and his staff will still remain in control, and that the change of ownership will have no special * affect on the main body of station agents and other employes.
