Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 65, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 18 April 1899 — About Our City Council. [ARTICLE]
About Our City Council.
It is certainly a remarkable circumstance, or rather combination of circumstances, that during the short time of less than two months, there should have occurred so many vacancies in the membership of the Rensselaer city council; four out of the six present members having been appointed within that time, to fill vacancies. The first vacancy was caused by death, that of Dr. M. B. Alter; in the first ward. Then Joseph Kight, in the third ward resigned because his business required him in Fair Oaks. Next W. H. Beam, also of the third ward, resigned because of the pressure of his duties as station agent and poor health. The fourth and last vacancy was caused by the resignation of F. B. Meyer, who was appointed postmaster. The only members of the present, council who were elected by the people are John Eger, and C. G. Spitler. Mr. Eger is the only member who will hold over after next year’s election, without a re-election.
