The Bell Telephone Company which is as big u monopoly in its way as the Standard Oil Company ortho Western Union Telegraph Company, is always on the watch to gobble up every paying system of independent control. One of latest of their acquisitions is the Frankfort telephone system. That they are casting covetous eyes on the Rensselaer system, goes without saying. Furthermore, it also goes without saying that the majority of the stock in the Rensselaer system is owned by parties who are doing business on business principles, and if the Bell people want this system bad enough to pay the price, it will be sold to to them; and this is said not as a criticism but simply a common sense statement of an every day fact. And should the Beil people thus get control of the system here, along with it will go the local company’s franchise up to the year 1913. That will give the Bell people a practical monopoly umil that time; for it is only in towns of large size that there is enough telephone business to support an independent company where the Bell people have a foot hold. Thinking of those things makes us more than ever sorry that our city council took such precipitate action in extending to such a far-off period the franchise of the local company.
BLACKFORD.
Winter has returned in full blast with plenty of snow. The farmers will be rather late putting in their spring crop. Mr. Gifford wants the Rensselaer people to see what fine onions he had raised on his farm last y ear. As he has started them by water route down the ditch and the Iroquois river. Supposed they have reached Rensselaer ere this. Thomas Price is on the sick list. Miss Nellie Barkley went the first of the week to Marion, Ind., where she will attend school this summer. Max Burliege and family moved from Barkley to Rensselaer last week. Quite a number of the young men of around here have gone down about Remington to work for the coming summer, We think it a good plan that they should get out and make men out of themselves instead of loafing around as a great many of them have been doings Boys don’t spend your money uselessly bnt in a good honest way.
That Coming Glee Club.
A grand entertainment is anticipated, when the Wabash College Glee Club and mandolin and guitar combination occupies the stage at the opera house, next Thursday night April 6th. It is getting to be quite a famous combination and is sure to give us a thoroughly enjoyable and high class entertainment. They are coming under the auspices of the Daughters of the American Revolution, And the net proceeds of their entertainment will be for the very laudable and philanthropic purpose of purchasing books for the new public library.
