MANY REBELS SLAIN.
Shelled by Gunboat While Attempting to Cross a River. At daylight Saturday Gen. Wheaton’s outposts discovered a large body of rebels attempting to cross the river for the purpose of re-enforcing the enemy at Guadalupe and a gunboat advanced under a heavy fire and poured shot into the jungle on both sides of the river and shelled the enemy’s position at Guadalupe, effectually scattering the rebels. The enemy’s loss was heavy. Private John T. Oiz of Battery C, Third artillery, was killed. On board the gunboat Privates William Wheeler of Company L and Louis Barrien of Cooipuny G, California regiment, were wounded.
