Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 44, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 3 February 1899 — Mirth vs. Cheerfulness. [ARTICLE]

Mirth vs. Cheerfulness.

I have always preferred to mirth. The former Is an act, the| latter, a habit of the mind. Mirth fin short and transient; cheerfulness, fixe® and permanent. Those are often raise® into the highest transports of mirf|| who are subject to the greatest deprcql sions of melancholy. On the eonttarf|l cheerfulness, though it does not gtiH the mind such an exquisite gladnew| yet it prevents us from falling into ans| depths of sorrow. Mirth is like a flas|i of lightning, that breaks through m gloom of clouds, and glitters for a mij|| ment. Cheerfulness keep* up a kin® of daylight in the mind, filling it wit® a steady and perpetual serenity.—Adttf-|
