A LONG LIFE.
It is said that the plans are prepared and the oapital all ready for the construction of six ships at San Francisco which will be as large and as swift as our St. Paul and Bt. Louis, if only the shipping bill introduced in the House by Representative Payne and in the Senate by Senator Hanna, is passso it is said, will also put on a halfdozen great freight and passenger carriers to extend and accommodate their trade to the Orient if that bill passes. Meanwhile arrangements are being swiftly made to establish German steamship lines before the proposed American law can be established. Now or never, so far as the expanding trade of the Pacific is conperned, seems to be the motto to be adopted by Senator Hanna and his colleagues.
Gov. Mount’s proposition to teach a moderate amount of agriculture in our public schools has been rejected by the legislature. But the governor’s idea is sound in principle and it will not be many years before it will be adopted in our country schools. There are many things oonneoted with agrioulture at whioh an hour or two every week could be very profitably and pleasantly spent by our country schools. There is nothing in the ideas of those legislators who spouted against “theoretical fanners.” The day is almost here, in fact is here already in many parts of the country, when farming must be praotioed in a scientific manner; and much of the knowledge necessary to mnkft scientific farming possible can be easiest acquired in the pnblio schools.. Germany, whioh now produces the best farmers on earth, that is the fanners most capable of producing the most for fiw amount of land they oultivate, teaches agriculture in the public schools and by all reports the plan is a great success.
