The real reason why the friendship of Great Britain was so valuable to the United States during our war with Spain was because she possessed the greatest navy in the world. While we are grateful for Great Britain’s friendship, and what it implies, is there no undercurrent of humiliation felt by our people to think that we stood ; n need of that friendship to defend us from the interference of the powers 'of continental Europe? And if such an insecure thing as an alien nation’s friendship is all that preserves us from the interference of other nations, shall we not hasten, while we may, to secure ourselves against it? An adequate navy and a great merchant marine all of our own, manned by our citizens, is our best and safest reliance. Bro. Bitters, of the Rochester Republican, comments on the matter of a printed court docket in Fulton county, and for a seven times seasoned philosopher like him, he adopts a tone of considerable acrimony. During the years the county was under democratic control, the democratic editor printed the docket at SSO or S6O a term. When a Republican clerk was elected. Bro. Bitters printed the docket, but the democratic judge cut the price to S3O a term. Then the judge grew more economical still and abolished the printed docket entirely. Now a democratic clerk has again been elected, and the judge concludes he will again have a printed docket, and the democratic editor will print it and get most any price he wants, as in days of old. “Great is Democracy,” quoth Bitters, right Bitterly.
Jasper County in The War.
Although Jasper County had no opportunity to send any organized force into the recent war, though ready and anxious to do so, we still sent about 34 or 35 young men to the army; about twenty of whom were residents of the county when they enlisted, and the others enlisted from other states, where they had recently gone. Of these 35 three have died, Elwood Spriggs, Wallace Stivers and Joseph Turner, and quite a number of others have been seriously sick. Company 1., of the 161st regiment, contained over half of all who have gone from this county, namely 19. In this regiment 12 deaths have occurred since its organization, of these 12, 5 were from company 1., and of the five, two were from this county. Thus Jasper county’s deaths in this regiment have been far out of proportion to the number of our men in it. In fact, in the whole regiment only one man in a hundred has died, while from this county, there have been two deaths ametog 19 men.
