The Messenger Verdict Affirmed.
The supreme court Thursday affirmed the case of Wm. Messenger against the State of Indiana. Messenger was sentenced to imprisonment for life for killing Chas Nelson at San Pierre, Starke county. The circumstances are well remembered here, from the fact that Mesaenger and his relatives a short time previous to the murder, lived in Rensselaer and its vicinity, for a year or two. Messenger appealed on the ground that the bailiff had told the jury that “they would be a great deal older than they were before the judge would let them out unless
they agreed,” and that some of the jurymen had been induced, to agree to the verdict solely by a desire to gain their liberty. The supreme court says that it is not sufficiently shown that bailiff made the remark, nor that it exerted any influence on the verdict if he did make it.
