Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 25, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 29 November 1898 — To Cash Pension Checks. [ARTICLE]
To Cash Pension Checks.
Postmasters generally have been notified of an order that will cause considerable to soldiers who live in or near towns which have money order post-of-fices and no banks. In future all that pensioners will have to do to have their checks cashed will be to present them at any postoffice authorized to do a money-order business, and the checks will be cashed the same as money ordors. The order does not apply to places that have banks. The order is issued by Perry S. Heath, first assistant postmaster, and is in response he says to numerous requests made by postmasters throughout the country. In the event that the smaller office should not have sufficient money on hand to meet the payment of the checks, postmasters are directed to apply to the department at Washington for a draft for the necessary amount.
