Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 22, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 18 November 1898 — Pierson Will Not Contest. [ARTICLE]
Pierson Will Not Contest.
E. E. Pierson, who was defeated by two votes by his democratic opponent in the race for County Clerk, has abandoned the idea of contesting Mr. Major’s election. It seems that several decisions of the Supreme Court muke it practically impossible to carry on a successful contest when the result depends on votes that have been counted and destroyed, no matter how erroniously they were marked. The law seems against Pierson, but in justice he should have had the office,, and would have had it had the same practice been observed all over the county, either as to throwing ont or counting votes marked in a certain irregular way.
