Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 18, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 4 November 1898 — Our Court House Clock. [ARTICLE]
Our Court House Clock.
The tower clock and bell at the court house is another of the standing causes of Democratic misrepresentation. For instance it is reported that offers from reliable parties for tower clocks and bells were received for S6OO or SBOO, or most any old price, to hear the kickers tell it. * The truth is, however, that the lowest bid received was from the E. Howard Watch & Clock Co., of Springfield, Mass. Their bid was for $2,000, and it is now on file at the court house, and may be seen by those who wish to see it. Another bid was by the well known Seth Thomas Clock Co., for $2,170. Now both of these bids were a little less than was paid for the clock and bell now in the court house. The cost of that was $2,300. Both of the former bids were simply for clock towers, with dials only in the tower, and which had to be laboriously wound every week, and for bells of a ton weight. The clock that was bought has dials in the tower, and besides has a dial in every office and court room in the building, does not have to be wound up, aRd also includes a most excellent bell, of a ton weight. Evidently, this outfit at $2,300 is a much better bargain than, the Seth Thomas bid at $2,170, or the Howard bid at $2,000. In this connection, it may and again it may not, comfort the Democratic court house kickers, to know that the democratic commissioners of Allen county are putting up a similar clock system to ours in their new million dollar m court house, at Fort Wayne. But whether it comforts them or not, it is a fact, all the same.
