Gone To Be A Deaconess.
Miss Lelia Middleton, daughter of Rev. H. M. Middleton, left Friday to enter upon a life of religious and philanthropic work. She goe3 to Washington City, to begin a two years course at Lucy Webb Hayes training school for nurses, and at the conclusion of which, she expects to devote herself to the regular work of the Deaconess’ order. Miss Middle ton, who is a graduate of the Classical department of DePauw university, had designed to devote herself to foreign missionary work, but at leaving college she found her health too delicate for the missionary field, but she has found in the work of the deaconesses an ample field for all her religious and philanthropic zeal. The order or society of Deaconesses is to a large measure, to the Methodist church, what the Sisters of Charity, and other similar orders, are to the Catholic church. They live in “homes” and devote themselves to charitable and religious work. They also have schools and hospitals. In the large cities the greater part of what is called pastoral work of the M. E. churches is now done by the deaconesses. Unlike the Catholic sisters the deaconesses are free to leave the life if they choose.
Faust.
On Thursday eve, Nov. 3rd, the stage at Ellis’ Opera House will be given to an elaborate production of Faust by Mr. Porter J. White accompanied by Miss Olga Verne and Frank MacDonald, supported ' by a strong cast under the management of Richard Lambert. This axoellent company carries two sets of scenery so that they can give a complete performance on any sized stage. Too much cannot be said of this, the grandest of all plays, which from a moral and instructive standpoint is alone the most wonderful. It is the old orthodox story vividly displayed. It appeals
to the better nature of all classes and remains indelibly stamped upon the memories of all so fortunate as to witness it.
M- E. Church Notes.
The special meetings at Watson school house became so interesting last Friday night that they could not be closed. After the pastor had dismissed them the people were so anxious for their continuance that Mr. Middleton consepted to resume them again to-night (Tuesday night.) They will continue till Thursday night at least. Sunday was Quarterly meeting day at the Methodist church. The service yesterday morning was devoted to the Holy Communion. Rev. Dr. Beck, the presiding elder, was present at night and preached a very able and entertaining sermon. Quarterly Conference was held at 8 o’clock this morning. Dr. Beck returned to his home at Valparaiso Monday forenoon.
