Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 15, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 25 October 1898 — Honest John Ross. [ARTICLE]
Honest John Ross.
The Rensselaer Democrat is so busy making false charges of dishonesty against Republican officials and candidates that it has no time to consider the true charges that it might make against the head of the Democratic district and county ticket. We commend the following from a Fowler paper to the consideration of the Democrat. Every issue of the Benton Re-, view under the present control has contained a half dozen or more attacks upon the honesty of the Republican county officials. “No direct charges have been made except the one that the County Commissioners compromised with Boice but by innuendoes, slurs, winks, etc., it seeks to ruin their reputation. The remedy advertised is, to elect Democrats to office, i Open the Review on the editorial page in black type. “For Congress—John Ross.” Talk about official honesty and endorse John Ross! After Ross had taken five or six thousand dollars from his neighbors in York township he was arraigned before the bar of justice. Did he plead guilty? O, no! “The statute of limitation forbids the bringing of this suit. What are you going to do about it?” All that the devil and Judge Davidson, his attorneys, could do
was done to prevent the trial of this cause. The history of this case reads like a romance of inquity, but thanks to Joe Perkins the case was tried and every charge, every dollar and every cent was sustained by the lower court arid supreme court, and finally paid under judgment by John Ross to York township. Honesty and John Ross! How can a ticket be an honest ticket which bears the name of John Ross?”
