Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 20, Number 12, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 14 October 1898 — Nate J. Reed. [ARTICLE]
Nate J. Reed.
Candidate For Sheriff. Nate J. Reed, the candidate for sheriff on the Republican ticket, is not a native Hoosier. Without having been consulted as to his wishes in the matter, his parents took the liberty of bringing him into the world in Warren county, Ohiy; but having discovered their mistake a few years later, they moved while Nate was still young to Warren county, Indiana. There, in August, 1862, Nate being then 18 years old aad full of fight as an egg is of meat, enlisted in the 72nd Indiana regiment and served till the end of the war, in 1865. As Nate was 18 years old in 1862 a little skillful work in arithmetic will show that he is 54 now. Two years ago, when he 'was running for the first time, and The Republican gave his age away, he had a nervous chill; but that was because he was a bachelor then and anxious to remedy that condition. Since then he has won the hand of a young and handsome lady, and is no longer sensitive as to the number of his years. He has filled the office of sheriff very acceptably for nearly two years, and well deserves the second term the people will elect him to on Nov. Bth. He hasbeen prompt, vigilant and faithful in discharging all the duties of his position; and at the same time, has sought in every way consistent with his public duties, to be accommodating and lenient towards individuals; and in the many foreclosures and other legal judgments which necessarily followed the financial depression of the free trade period, he always has extended every possible favpr to unfortunate debtors.
