A Santiago Soldier Coming Home
Arthur Lakin, formerly of Newton Tp., is expected to arrive in Rensselaer on the 1:45 p. m. train next Saturday. He is a member of the 4th U. S. infantry, and is coming home on a furlough. He was at Santiago during the fighting and where bullets were flying fast and furious. He did not have the misfortune to stop any, although one went through his hat and another through his coat sleeve. •His chum, who is the regimental bugler, is coming with him, for a visit. Capt. Everett Halstead, of the Jasper county Rough Riders company, and others, are preparing to give young Lakin and his companion a fitting reception, when he arrives Saturday afternoon. Capt. Halstead will have out his company, to meet them at the depot, and so also will a large detachment of old soldiers from th,e G. A. R. post. The inarch down town will be headed by the martial band. A halt will be made at the public square where brief addresses will be made by Capt. J. A. Burnham, Rev. B F. Ferguson and others, and perhaps some war experiences related by the returning soldiers.
