Old Settlers’ Meeting.
It Was a Great Success In Exercises and Attendence. The second annual meeting of the Old Settlers’ Association of Jasper County was held Saturday, in Simon Phillips’ grove, just west of town. It was an even greater success than the first meeting last year, and has evidently fully established Old Settlers’ as a great annual event, for many years to come. The attendance in the forenoon was small but in the afternoon was very large, a conservative estimate being 8,500 people. Good addresses were made by J. T. Randle and W. W. Wishard on “Our Earliest Settlers.” By Jared Benjamin on “Origin of local appellations.” S. P. Thompson, “Something of our corporate names.” R. S. Dwiggins, “The courts prior to 1865.” Dr. M. B. Alter, “The Old Doctors.” Isaac Sayler, “The primitive preachers.” W. S. Day and Henry C. Smith, on “The ancient pedagogues.” On Office Holders, Clerks, J. F. Irwin; Auditors Ira W. Yeoman; Treasurers, I. B. Washburn; Sheriffs, C. W. Hanley. “Jasper’s Warriors,” James A. Burnham. The Indians’ paper by David Nowels. read by the secretary. Sheep vs Wolves, Augustus Stimson. Social Parties, Mrs. Elizabeth Purcupile. Pioneer Boys, Lewis S. Alter, David H. Yeoman. An exhibition of old relics, such as household and farming implements, old guns and pistols etc., organized and managed by L. S. Alter, and was a feature of the day which attracted great attention.
