They Are Public Enemies.
The yellow papers like the Chicago Tribune and the yellow preachers like Myron Reed are now the ones who are howling loudest against the management of the war because of sickness among our soldiers in Cuba and Porto Rico. Yet what would the conditions have been had the advice of the Tribune and the preacher have been acted on? All along through the earlier part of the war, and even before it, the Tribune yelled and clamored and raged lor “on to Havana.” If the Tribune’s advice had been taken several hundred thousand undrilled, undesciplined, practically unarmed and unsuitable clothed and sheltered American soldiers would have been sent to die like sheep in a pit, in the pestilent swamps around Havana; while in the case of the widely quoted anarchist preacher, he would have made the number at least a million. While our splendid war ships would have been exposed to almost certain destruction in an unequal attack on the almost impregnable defenses of the Cuban capital. Had the advice of Medill been taken more American soldiers would have uselessly lost their lives around Havana during the last two months, than were lost during any whole year of the great civil war; and had that of Myron Reed been fully carried out, the loss of life would have exceeded that of either North or South during the whole period of that war. Men like the whole tribe of yellow journalists and yellow preachers are public enemiesfmore pernicious than the Spaniaids, but there is no punishment for them except it be in the general loathing and execration of the people. That at least ought to be their portion in the fullest measure-. • A good coach will be set out at Rensselaer for the accommodation of people who desire to attend the G. A. R. meeting at Cincinnati.
