The American Newspaper.

The Indianapolis News wisely says: There are some extremely "cultured” people who pretend to have great contempt for newspapers and the newspaper habit, and who talk much of "newspaper English.” but even these would find life duller than usual if they were deprived of their paper. The fact that they will not acknowledge their obligations to the institution they pretend to despise, only serves to convict them of dishonesty; it does not prove that they are any less hopeless victims than are other people. We live in an atmosphere of publicity, and publicity, with all its vulgarity. has its good side. It makes up for virtue in boty public aud private life. The American newspaper' with all its faults and shortcomings, which are many and obvious, comes pretty near being a part of the government of the American Republic.
