A Suitable Name.
Now that we have Hawaii, one of the first things this government should dp is to change its name. At present only one man in a hundred can pronounce Hawaii properly. and he is not sure of it. Give the island a good American name. —Ex. And what shall We call it? It would not be proper to give it either the name of Tom Reed or Crumpacker; McKinley would sound too much like politics; Dewey will probably receive some recognition in the Philippines; Sampson, Schley and Shafter in Cuba and Porto Rico; the “Combinationists” would get mad if we called it “Sugar Trust,” but it must be named. Suppose we call it “Cleveland.” That illustrious demagogue was not exactly in favor of annexation but we understand that there is some excellent duck hunting on the island.—Chalmers Ledger.
