Acknowledgements Need No Stamp.
A short time ago The Republican published the fact that acknowledgement’s of signatures on deeds and mortgages required a ten cent revenue stamp; this being the decision of A. E. Nowlin, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., collector for this district, as given in answer to a telegram from R. B. Porter, recorder of Jasper County. A few days ago however, the Chicago papers published as the decision of W. B. Scott, the commissioner of internal revenue, at Washington, that such acknowledgements and certificates did not need a stamp. Mr. Porter wrote at once to Mr. Nowlin, reminding him of his former decison, and asking if the statement as to Mr. Scott’s decision was official. Mr. Nowlin wrote back, under the date of July 25th, as follows. “It is official. The Commissioners over-rules me. Nowlin Col.” .
