What the Solidest Republican Papers Think.
Hawaii Annexed. CiVcago Inter Ocean. Bv a vote of 42 to 21 the Senate has concurred in the House resolution annexing Hawaii. One stroke of the President’s pen and annexation will be an accomplished fact. This is one of the great victories of history. The key to the Pacific ocean, naval and commercial, is now ours, with no danger of its being again thrown away. What was gained by Harrison and lost through Cleveland has been restored and can never again be jeopardized. The importance of this annexation is very much greater now than it was when President Harrison laid before the Senate for its approval the original treaty of annexation. Today our position as a member of the family of nations is radically different. We are now one of the great powers, and in world movements must be deferred to. The acquisition of Hawaii enables us to maintain with ease the new position which we are to occupy henceforth.
