For Joint .Representative. The Republican district convention to nominate a candidate for representative in Congress for the tenth Indiana district to succeed Hon. E. D. Crumpacker, ofValparaiso, convened in Ellis’ opera house, in Rensselaer, at 1:45 P. "M.. this Wednesday afternoon, May 11th. The meeting was called to order by District Chairman, T. J. McCoy. The call was read by District Secretary Mills. The chairman of the committee on permanent organization recommended Hon. J. Frank Hanly, of Lafayette, for permanent chairman and Joseph Chizum, of Newton for secretary, and the Republican editors for assistant secretaries. The report was adopted by acclamation, and Mr. McCoy introduced Mr. Hanly, whc proceeded to address the convention. Mr. Hanly spoke with his usual eleoquence, briefly alluding in most patriotic terms to the present situation of war. Spoke of the successful manner in which the Republican party had kept its financial and tariff pledges, and of the great results to the people of, the country that have followed the return of the party to power. Mr. Hanly spoke for about 20 minutes. A notable feature of his address was a letter to the convention from Mr. Crumpacker, the present congressman and the only candidate for the nomination. Chairman of committee on resolutions, presented the resolutions which are too numerous and extensive for publication until a later issue. The resolutions were unanimously adopted. Hon. J. Frank Hanley was endorsed for U. S. Senator, amid a scene of great enthusiasm. There being no contests the report of the credentials committee was not called for. The report of the commjttee on rules and order, was adopted. The counties were called for nominations. Benton county, being the first called, presented the name of Hon. E. D. Crumpacker.. Each of the other eight counties seconded Mr. Crumpacker’s nomination. Mr. McCord, of Warren, moved that Mr. Crumpacker be nominated by acclamation. Carried unanimously. Hon- U. Z. Wiley, of Fowler, was then called for and made a brief speech which was well received. The convention then adjourned. The Representative Convention The convention to nominate a candidate for joint representative for Lake and Jasper counties was held immediately after the con-
gressional convention. E. W. Wickey, of East Chicago, was chosen chairman, and M.-L. Spitler, of Rensselaer, secretary. The counties were called for nominations and Jesse E. Wilson nominated Charles E. Mills. He presented the claims of Jasper county to the nomination in a very clear and forcible manner. J. F. Irwin presented the name of Samuel E. Yeoman, of RensseJaer. Senator J. W. Youche, of Crown Point named A. F. Knotts of Hammond. THE BALLOT. Jasper Lake Mills 11 Yeoman 8 Knotts 49 C. W. Hanley 1 Mr. Mills moved that the nomination of Mr. Knotts be made unanimous, and Mr. Yeoman seconded the motion. The motion was adopted. Mr. Knotts was called to the platform, and made a few remarks.
