Fortifying st. Johns.

St, Johns, N. F„ May 9.—Owing to the eerions international complications growing out of the war between the dnHed States and Spain, the British government is arranging to fortify St. Tohns.

the smallest in the navy—-the torpedo boat Dupont and the auxiliary cruiser Hornet, of the mosquito fleet. Three blockhouses were destroyed and it is almost certain a number of Spanish soldiers were killed. The bombardment was brought about by the temerity of the Matanzas Spaniards, who apparently were not content with the fearful execution wrought last week by the greater ships of the fleet.
