Death of John H. Shields.
John H. Shields, whose bringing home from Mt. Ayr Saturday, in a paralyzed condition, from appoplexy, was mentioned else-, where died at his home at Rensselaer at 6:40 p. m. Saturday, April 30, at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 11 days. When found he lay on the load of corn he was hauling, and the team had stopped of its own accord. He never regained consciousness, after he was discovered. Mr. Shields was born in Watertown, Ohio, Aug. 19th 1826. He came to Jaspor Co. in 1846, and remained one year and then returned to Ohio. One year later, in 1848, he came again and has ever since made this county his home. He lived in Barkley Tp., till 1870, and then in Union Tp., until 1883, when he came to Marion Tp., south of Rensselaer. He has lived in Rensselaer itself for the past four years. He married Elizabeth Lakin in 1858. Six children were born, of whom 5 are living: David W., John M., Harley O. Shields, Lucy J. Malchow, and Katie Shields. Mr. Shields was one of a family of 11 children, of whom’ all are dead except two brothers, J. D. Shields, of Kansas, and B. L. Shields, of Nebraska, and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Bull, of Rensselaer and Mrs. Robt. Morris, of Delphi. Brief funeral services were held at the residence at 10:30 this, Monday, forenoon, by Rev. V. O. Fritts, and interment then made in Crockett cemetery, southeast of town.
