Gov. Tanner’s Hopes Blasted.
Springfield, Ilf., April 20. Gov. Tanner’s hopes of leading Illinois troops to the front were Thursday mornlngblasted completely. He received word from Washington which confirmed previous announcements that he would not be placed by President McKinley. Upon reoelpPof this information Co!. Val Cleave, inspector general, resigned. Gov. Tanner says there were no other resignations. Gen. William Clendenin, cf Moline, has been appointed by the governor to succeed Col. Van Cleave as inspector general. He is ordered to report here for duty this morning.
