From The Bold Soldier Boys
Indianapolis, Ind., Apr. 28, 1808. Editor Republican: We arrived here this after noon at five o’olock, and left the train at the Belt Railroad and caught a car for the Fair Grounds, and were at once questioned as to what was our business, and having told them “enlisting” we were sent to head quarters, and- were told they were full and needed no more recruits, and we turned away not a little gloomy. But “if at first you don’t succeed try try again.” We commenced our hunt for the First Regiment, and after strolling all over a space of about two miles, I run onto an old friend and he directed us to our destination, about a mile from the entrance. We found the Captain of Co. I and on presenting our papers Corporal H. G. Kennett was ordered to line us up for “mess,” which was the first welcome words we had received since arriving. But finding they were short of “grub” told the Captain we would go to town, and his last words were “we will muster
you in tomorrow” and ready to shout we started for town. Here the windows told lis all the latest" war news all the way from “stale” to '‘cheering” and the streets in front are crowded with people eager to hear the latest news. Hoping to hear that Rensselaer will soon respond with a company I remain Yours Resp’y, E. M. Middleton.
