Two New Divorce Cases.
Mrs. Marie Haas of Rensselaer,, begun suit for a divorce from Prof. Carl Haas. They were married at Defiance, Ohio, Feb. 14, 1888, and separated Dec. 15th, 1897. The plaintiff’s ' maiden name was Marie Schlientz. The complaint alleges cruel and inhuman treatment as the grounds for the divorce. Says Haas is a man of very violent temper, and often, on small provocation or no prqvocation at all, would strike and beat the plaintiff, slap her in the face, swear at her and call her vile and abusive names etc. The plaintiff supports herself and children by teaching music, -and formerly had to support the defendant, also. He is now understood to be living at Chicago, although having dropped into town Saturday night he was served with a summons in this case*.
They have three children, 2. 7, and 10 years old, respectively, and these the plaintiff asks the custody. Also the restoration of her maiden name. The defendant being entirely worthless, it is not asked that any order be made requiring him to help support the children. The plaintiff in this case is an eminently respected lady, and has always had the sympathy of the community in her unfortunate matrimonial relations. The case is set for the June term. Another new divorce case, in which also a Rensselaer lady is the plaintiff, is that of Mrs. Adda D. Crosscup vs Charles Crosscup. They were married July 22 1884 and separated Mrfr. 8, 1896; upon which date the defendant wholly abandoned the plaintiff and her children and has never since made any provision for their support. • They have three children aged 8 11 and 13 years, respectively, and of these the plaintiff asks the custody. The defendant being wholly worthless no request is made that he be ordered to contribute to the support of the family.
