It la understood that China has conceded the demands of France. They differ, It is added, somewhat from the first demands. Capt. Sampson has been authorized, at his discretion, to dissolve the court of inquiry which investigated the loss of the battleship Maine. Jack Carr, an ex-Unlted States mall carrier, has arrived at Departure Bay from St. Michaels, via Dawson, with advices from Andree, the Arctic balloonist. The United States torpedo boat Somers, recently purchased In Germany, has arrived at Weymouth, Eng., and, It la said, will coal and immediately start for New York. Rev. Charles A. Briggs, professor of Biblical theology in Union seminary, has tendered his resignation from the New York Presbytery and will join the Episcopal church. Officers of the Twentieth regiment, United BUtes Infantry, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., received orders Tuesday from the war department to be ready to move at a moment's notice. Delegates are arriving In large numbers for the convention of the League of Bimetallic Clubs of the Ohio Valley, which will open at Indianapolis, Ind., to-day and continue In session two days. i The steamer Miowera, from Australia, ' brings details of the recent terrific hurricane In New Caledonia. It did much damage to shipping, demolishing buildings and damaging crops in the interior. On a farm a few miles south of Ottawa, 111., Anton Scherer, aged 11, was cut to pieces under a four-horse disc, the team running away. The boy died in his father s arms while being carried to the house. The United States gunboat Wheeling has ■ left Seattle, Wash., for Alaska. She has I on board the members of the government I geological survey parties bound for Haines . Mission and Cook’s Inlet, for the purpose of making a thorough exploration of Alaska. The navy department Tuesday morning concluded the purchase of four of the ten ships contracted for Monday. Ths four i vessels selected, and which are now the property of the government, are the Morgan line steamers El Rio, El Norte, El Sol and El Sud.
