Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 19, Number 59, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 29 March 1898 — “The War is Inevitable.” [ARTICLE]
“The War is Inevitable.”
Every indication now points to a war with Spain, and at a very early day. It will be over the Cuban question, rather than over the Maine matter, although that is likely to have great effect in precipitating matters. The reports of Senators Proctor and Thurston have confirmed all the terrible things that have been told of the wholesale murder and starvation of the Cuban people, and the people of the United States have at last awakened to their sense of duty in the matter, and have determined that the war in Cuba must cease, and that Cuba must be free. Never was it more clearly the duty of any nation to interfere in the affairs of other nations, in the name of humanity, than it now is our duty to interfere in Cuba. It is evident too that Spain will fight before she will submit to the loss of Cuba by peaceful means. Therefore we-think it can be said, as Patrick Henry nearly 125 years ago said, that the “war is inevitable,” and as he said then, so say we now “let it come.” War is a terrible thing, but to avoid a just, holy and necessary war, because of its torribleuess, is a greater calamity to a nation than war.
