The Hack License Case.
The case against Jerry Schofield, charged with violating a city ordinance, in running two hacks when he had license for only one, was tried Friday afternoon, before the city court and decision rendered by Squire Burnham, last Saturday morning. It seems that a number of days ago, Schofield was requested to have an extra good rig at the depot, to meet a party of musicians, coming to play at a dance. He got a rig at White’s livery stable, and a team at his brother’s stable. He drove this rig nnd his hired man drove his regular hack. The same day ho had the same rig at another train, for an expected party for St. Joseph’s college, but this party did not come. It was shown in evidence that Jerry raised his accustomed shout of ‘‘here’s your hack,” or something like it, when at the depot with this extra rig. The Squire appeared to think the offense was mostly a technical violation of* the ordinance, as he fixed the penalty at a fine of 25 cents and costs. The entire amount will not exceed §7. The defendant however, has taken an appeal to the circuit court. The case was hard fought on account of the principle involved. City Attorney Mills prosecuted the case and Jesse E. Wilson defended.
