“Lazy Bill” Dahlen is field captain of the Chicago ball team. Lake navigation will open much earlier this season than usual. The election returns in Japan show a small majority for the Government. An explosion in a mine at Belmez, Spain, killed scores of men. Sixty bodies t have been recovered. H. T. Wilson has been appointed receiver for Col. A. L. Conger of Akron, Ohio, default judgments for SII,OOO being taken. The feeling against Americans at San Juan, Porto Rico, is so bitter that United States Consul Hanna will probably ask for a warship. The Navy Depurtment'bM issued orders for the location of a squadron in Hampton Roads and another .at Port Royal, S. C., to be made up by dividing the fleet at Tortuga s. Rev. Samuel G. Bettes, the cowboy preacher, is going to the Klondike. He will do evangelical work along the way and will depend upon his collections for subsistence. Justice Daly, in the Supreme Court of New’ York, has signed the decree granting the divorce asked for by Caroline Ravenbill Ratcliffe from E. J. Ratcliffe, the wife beater. The impeachment trial of Mayor Graham of Lincoln, Neb., was concluded and the City Council, by a vote of 9 to 4, declined to impeach, a two-thirds vote being necessary. Hancock & Co. of Philadelphia, grain dealers, have leased the Coatsworth elevator in Buffalo, N. Y. The elevator it* the sixth in capacity in Buffalo's harbor, having bins for 650,000 bushels. A general increase in wages of Lehigh Valley passenger trainmen has been made. Conductors who have been getting $2.75 per day now receive $3.25. Baggage masters have been increased to $2.30 per day and brakemen to $1.90 per day. One of the three pending 2-ccnt-fnre bills was defeated in the Ohio House of Representatives. A protest with 30,000 names was presented in the Senate when Mr. Valentine's bill came up tor disjiosition, and it was postpone*! for a week. Blanche K. Bruce, register of the treasury, died at Washington. Mr. Bruce's death had been expected for several days. He suffered from a complication of stomach troubles. He was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, March 1. 1841. The St. Petersburg Official Messenger publishes a note saying the Russian Government has instructed its representative at Seoul, the capital of Goren, to inform Ihe Emperor of Corea and his ministers that if, in their opinion, Corea no longer requires foreign help and is capable of prenerving, with her own resources, the independence of her internal administration, Russia will not hesitate to recall the Russian financial adviser. It is learned that Baroness de Kirsch lately sent from Paris a large sum of money, the interest of which is to be applied to maintaining and extending the Hebrew farms and agricultural interests founded by the late Baron de Hirseh near Vineland, N.
