Charged With Robbery.
Tuesday night F. B. Meharry, a hardware traveler from Indianapolis, Nick Williams and Jim Lee, from Lafayette, and an unknown traveling man were having a game in one of their rooms at the Makeever House, ostensibly to pass the time until the train. The fourth man left to take a train, and then, according to Meharry’s story the other two proceeded to do him up in great shape. He says that Williams dealt him four kings, and helped himself to three aces and a pair, and Meharry dropped a ten on that deal. He stayed in the game losing right along, and finally laid down a five, out of which he wanted to ante a quarter, and the others coolly picked up the bill and pocketed it. Meharry then proceeded to put up a roar for his money and Williams and Lee pulled out. Williams was caught by Policeman Childers but Lee got away on the night train to Monon, where he was arrested by the town marshal, and brought back here on the 9:55 a. m train this morning. _ They were taken before Squire Burnham, in the city hall, when it was found that Meharry, the prosecuting witness was not on hand, and the hearing was continued until one o’clock p. m. At one o’clock, Meharry not having appeared, and presumably left town, the trial was held without him. There was some evidence that the accused men were gambling in the hotel and also making a disturbance. The Squire bound them over to the circuit court in the sum of 8100 each. Williaihs has been here before, in the barbering businass. He wa; arrested at the hotel, and at first refused to be taken without a warrant, but Mr. Childers put the handcuffs on and took him along anyway.
