The Gamblers Weakened
Nick Williams and Jim Leo, the parties charged with holding up Meharry the traveling man, and whom Squire Burnham bound over to the circuit court, first tried to work a straw bail on the Squire, but failing in that they weakened, and rather than face a trial in the circuit court they withdrew their pleas of n d guilty and plead guilty to gaming. The Squire fined them each §5 and costs, the latter being about §l2 each. They put aip about all the money they had, and a watch, for the costs, and on their promise to leave town and stay left, the court remitted their tines. They left at once, and there is little danger of their coming back. It is presumed that by the help of some third party, they restored to Meharry his money, on condition that he slip out <>f town and not appear against them.
