Charged With Forgery.
Wednesday afternoon a check for s2l was accepted at the Chicago Bargain store for $lO worth of good, and the balance, sll in money. The check was payable to one John Steen, and signed ostensibly by John R. Phillips, of McCoysburg, the county assessor. The check was on McCoy's bank, but was offered for deposit at the Commercial. It was there thought to be a forgery, and being sent to McCoy’s, was there declared to be such. In the evening Police Childers arrested Dave Fredline, of Hanging Grove, who had the goods from Forsythe’s with him, and whom Frank Wood, who sold them, identified as the man who bought the gcods and gave the bogus check. Mr. Phillips came this morning and confirmed the forgery. Fredline is a man of family, who has always had a good reputation. His story is that a man handed him the bundle at the depot, and asked him to leave it at Gwin's store, at McCoysburg. Fredline’s trial was to be held at 3:30 Thursday afternoon, too late for reporting in this issue.
