President Iglesiaa ot Costa Rica declares that war with Nicaragua is inevitable. James Vincent Cleary, archbishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Kingston, is dead. The President has nominated Oliver J. D. Hughes of Connecticut as consul at Sonuebcrg, Germany. The cotton mill strikers of New Bedford, Mass., have issued an appeal for aid to continue their tight. Divers are said to hatfe ascertained that the keel of the Maine is stove upward, pointing to an explosion from the outside. The French Chamber of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Government in connection with the conviction of Zola. No action lias been taken on the resignations of the eight elders of Dr. Hall’s church at New York. Another elder, John Inglis, has resigned. Silas B. Brownell, Htated clerk of the cldors, will not resign. The President appointed Col, Henry C. Corbin adjutant general of the army, to succeed Gen. Samuel Brock, retired on account of age. Gen. Brock had held the office only since Sept. 11 last, when he succeeded Gen. Buggies. Receipts from the sale of public lands during ton years ending June 30 last were: Cash sales, $40,1)87,732; fees and commissions on tilings, etc., $10,123,538. Ilis English wife has sued for divorce, and the second wife asks to have her marriagi' to him annulled. ' Ray Fry and Hugh Sewell, prominent young men, quarreled at Jamestown. Pa., about a young woman and Sewell thrust a knife through Frjr’s heart, killing him instantly. Sewell then attempted suicide by cutting his throat and afterward by drowning. He has been arrested. The Kentucky House of Representatives has pased a bill which provides that any person who shall manufacture, sell, loan, barter, give away or use cigarettes or cigarette material shall be fined ip any sum not less than $lO nor more than SIOO. It is made a violation of the law to even have such articles in possession. The battleships Kentucky and Kenr-. snrge, now under course of construction at the navy yard of the Newport News (Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, will bt* launched on March 24. IV. P.
