That Canal Of Ours.

The Chicago News correspondence from the national capital says that there is a “stealthy but formidable” movement to secure an appropriation from congress to cut a ship canal from Lake Michigan to the headwaters of the Wabash river. Senator Turpie introduced a bill a few days ago authorizing an expenditure of $25,000 for a preliminary survey for the new waterway. Representative Crumpacker, who represents the district which includes all the territory through which the proposed canal will pass, intends to urge the passage of the bill in the house, and believes that it will go through. He regards it as a vital part of the scheme for improving Wolf lake, making of it a port and harbor of refuge, and to turn the entire region around about Hammond into a commercial territory.
