Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 19, Number 44, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 4 February 1898 — Ground Hog Day. [ARTICLE]
Ground Hog Day.
Wednesday was ground hog day, or when the ground hog, otherwise the woodchuck, awakes from his winter’s sleep nnd comes out to inspect the meteorological conditions. If ho can see his shadow, in other words if the sky is clear, he concludes there will be six weeks more winter, and he returns at once to his hole, and remains for that length of time. If he can not see his shadow, he concludes that the weather will be good enough for him, and remains awake. Today the weather was cloudy in the morning and got clear a little Inter in the day. It is therefore presumed that G. Hog is ns budly mixed on the weather as Irl Hicks nnd Foster, and will have to take it as it comes, or go without, the same as the rest of us do.
