INDIANA SCHOOL FUND.
The Setni-Adnual Apportionment Disburses Nearly a Million Dollars. The Indiana superintendent of public instruction has completed the January semiannual J apportionment of the common school revenue to the various counties of the State. The total amount of school tuition tax paid by the counties to the State for the six months was $963,321.63, and the amount in the treasury from other revenues was $2-,898.75, making the fund Mailable for distribution $980,220.38* The amount apportioned was $960,033.62, being a balance in the treasury of $20,180176. The per capita, or amount allowed each county, for every child, of school age, was $1.28. The per capita last January was $1.25 and last June $1.43. Reformatory Is Overcrowded. The population of the Jeffersonville reformatory is 008, an excess of 148 over the cell accommodations. The number is rapidly on the increase, and it is predieted will reach 1,000 by June 1.- Any number above 1(10 must be stowed away in the corridor on cots. The number of inmates is greater at present than at any time in the history of the institution. The Rev. George W. Switzer, pastor of the M. E. Church of West Lafayette, has been tendered tin* position of chaplain at the Indiana reformatory and vriu probably accept. The salary attached to the position is $1,200 n year. There has been no regular chaplain for some time, the pulpit being filled by different ministers. Rev. Mr. Switzer is a prominent Mason, having been an officer in the Grant) Commandery of the Knights Templar. Succeeds Father Corby. Dr. John 8. Zahm has been appointed provincial of the order of Holy Gross for the United Stab's, to,succeed the late Very Rev. William Corby of Notre Dame. Father Zahm was bom in Perry County, Ohio, and is 4<J years of ago. His mother is a descendant from the family of Gen. Braddock. lie has been a member of the order since his seventeenth year and has b<s‘ii director of study and vice-president’ .of the university over twelve years. Father Zahm is prominent in tlie literary and scientific world and his lectures oh evolution have made him famous in America. Dr. Zahm has been in Romo on a special mission, but has returned to America.
State Items of Interest. George Sisson of Ray was found dead in his harness shop. The coroner's inquest showed that he h:ld committed suicide. One of the oldest landmarks in Bartholomew County, a house on the farm of It. H. McHenry, near Azalia, burned |he other afternoon. Rev. Erie Tharpe, one of the three erty township preachers arrested last August for violation of the fish laws, acquitted nt Kokomo. St. John's Lutheran Church nt LnPorte has passed a resolution prohibiting thu going of cominiinion to persons who affiliate with worldly clubs and who attend dances and masquerade balls. In tlie Lake Superior Court nt Hammond, I’. J. Murray was awarded $1,952 in ids damage suit against the Chicago Transfer Terminal Railway Company. Murray was injured in a wreck on that road near Riverdale, 111.
