Mrs. Mrazik, who talked to the High School Tuesday morning, compared Hungary and America in a way rather unfavorable to the latter. In Hungary everything is under the authority of the government; the schools are more thorough and complete than ours the people have more patriotism; they have not our great desire for wealth; they have more of happiness and less of vice than we. While talking of the geography of Hungary she described the many rivers and streams that flow into the Danube, and the dams that are’ built to protect the cities and towns. She then said that Christianity should be a defence to all people against the evil in the world, as those great walls are a
defence against the water. Near the last of the talk she told of a remarkable echo in her country which had been almost destroyed by the erection of a large house in just the place to ruin the sounds. She compared this to the grand echoes we hear from the very best and highest things in life, and instead of receiving them into our lives we erect less worthy structures and so destroy the good. , As a conclusion she said that all should try to do three things: ad mit, submit, and transmit. Admit all truth, purity, and nobility; submit to direction and advice from those who are wiser; and then, as we are capable, give to others of what we possess.
When her talk was finished the school sang “America”, and Mrs. Mrazik repeated the Lord’s Prayer in the Hungarian language. Appropriate exercises for the Christmas-time were given in all the grades on Thursday afternoon. School closed Thursday for the Christmas holidays and work will not be resumed until Monday January 3rd, 1898.
