They Get More Thumps Than Thanks.
Rochester Republican: We are sorry one of our reporters found it necessary so early in his experience to defend his honor by defending his person with his fists. But such things are common to the profession, and experiences in such matters are essential to reportorial success. There are so many people with characters as black as the smoky dome of hades who are wonderfully sensitive about the expression of public opinion, and any newspaper reference to their questionable records acts like a red rag waved in the presence of a Spainish bovine. However, criticisms and abuse are about all the recognition the successful newspaper man receives, and he would feel discouraged and decidedly lonesome without them. The lican is known to be Remarkably profuse with its compliments of worthy persons, and sometimes to unworthy ones, but during our more than twenty-four years of editorial work in Rochester, but one person found sufficient thankfulness in his heart to thank us for the complimentari words spoken in his favor, and when his spirit passes to the immortal world the newspaper •fraternity of Rochester should see to it that a creditable and appropriate monument marks the rosting place of his remains.
