Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 19, Number 27, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 7 December 1897 — Fined For Selling Without License. [ARTICLE]
Fined For Selling Without License.
Barney Koezema, the depot quart shop man, whose trial on the charge of selling liquor without a license had been set for Saturday, before Squire Burnham, concluded not to make a fight on the charge and he therefore came in Friday afternoon and withdrew his former plea of not guilty and entered a plea of guilty, instead. His fine was S2O, which is the minimum under the statute, and the costs about $lO more, all of which was paid. Barney has been deceived by certain whiskeyites into believing that the anti-quart shop law was no good, but lie knows better now, and promises not to sell any more liquor. Ira Norris, a witness for the state in this case, made himself scarce and was brought in on a bench warrant. His break cost him several dollars.
