The Epworth League.
The Sub-District Convention -Lately iiu Session atJEtensselaer. The Valpariaso sub-district convention of the Epworth League met at Trinity M. E. church Friday evening, and continued until Sunday evening. Friday evening’s exercises consisted of devotional exercises conducted by Rev. H. M. Middleton. Address of Welcome by W. E. Overton, president of the local league, and responses by the following. ‘‘Who we are,” G. D. Prevo, of Medaryville. “Whence we came,” Franklin Grest, of Remington. “What we bring,” Chas. Day, of Monon. ‘•WTiat we seek,” Cora Longwell, of Francesville. Mrs. Clara Van Petten, of Medaryville made the principal address of the evening, on the subject, “Character Building” which was much appreciated. In the why of music, a cornet duet was given by Messrs Wisliard and Healy. After the the meeting a reception was given in honor of the visiting delegates, by Miss Stella Parkison, at her father’s residence, which was greatly enjoyed by all present. A special musical program was rendered by Misses Burgett, Alter and Duvall; and refreshments were served.
The principal features of Saturday afternoon’s session were papers on “Spiritual Life of the Leaguer,’’ by I. N., Warren, of Rensselaer; “Social Life according to Christ,” Mrs. J. B. Sayler, of Medaryville; “The League that wins,” Stella Parkison, of Rensselaer; “Look up, lift up,” Mrs. Blanche Goodwill, Monon; “The League against the saloon,” H. P. Overton, Rensselaer. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. Clara Van Petten, Medaryville, Vicepresidi'nt, J. A. Overton, Rensselaer; Secretary, Mrs. Eva Sayler, Medaryville; Treasurer, Win. Ott, of Remington. Saturday evening, devotional exercises by Miss Fannie Wood, and a paper on the subject, “The League through the week,” by Dr. S. C. Johnson, of Rensselaer. Rev. H. C. Weston, of Francesville, was on the program, but was called to Maryland by the death of his fath-er-in-law.
Sunday morning’s exercises were a Song service arid love feast, conducted by Prof. H. E. Osborn, of Rensselaer, and a sermon by Rev. J. L. Greenway, of Medaryville. Sunday afternoon’s papers were “The League as a factor in revival work” by Eva Sayler, of Medaryville; and “The Reading Circle, why essential to effective League work” by J. F. Warren, of Rensselaer. Sunday evening, the closing meeting of the session, was very largely attended. Johnson conducted the League lesson, J. A. Overton gave a paper on “How to keep out of a rut, in League work,” and Rev. H. M. Middleton gave an address. *
The delegates present from other places, were Rev, J. L. Greenway, Mrs. Van Petten, Mrs. Eva Sayler, Mrs. J. B. Sayler, Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Prevo, Mrs. Jennie Robinson, Mrs. Van Boston, of Medaryville; Miss Cora Longwell, of Francesville; Miss Kate Wood, Mrs. Blanche Goodwin, Chas. Day,, of Monon; Will Walker, Frank Grest, Will Ott, of Remington. The next semi-annual convention will be held at Remington.
