WHOOP, HOO-RAY!
The Battle is Fought and the Victory Won, And Sixteen to Six is the Way it Was Done, And Now Our Boys are Champions of N. W. Indiana. The last foot ball game of the season was played here yesterday afternoon, It was Valparaiso against Rensselaer- Both were heretofore unconquered teams, and the game was to decide the championship of Northwest Indiana.
There was an immense crowd present at the game, and great interest taken in every stage. The Valparaiso boys were fine manly fellows and they played a good game, but hardly as stiff a one as did the last Battle Ground team. This makes the sixth game our boys have played this season and they have won every game. Only 10 points have been scored against them in all the games, while our boys have scored 104 points. The College, Watseka, Battle Ground two games, Crown Point and Valparaiso is the string. The game of yesterday was measurably free from rough playing, and was characterized with the best of feeling among the players. McGee of Valpo and Meyers of Rensselaer were hurt and had to retire.
The following is a brief summary of the game, in detail. Marshall won the toss and chose the south goal. Valparaiso kicked to Collins, who advanced 10 yds. A couple of plays Brinley went around left end for 30 yds, Meyers hit right tackle for 5, Marshall right tackle for 3, Brinley left end 5, Meyers left tackle 5, Marshall then hit tackle for 5, scoring the first touch down. Time of play 4 minutes. Brinley missed goal. Rens. 4. V. 0. Valparaiso kicked to Washburn who made 10 yds. Our boys kept their line smashing, advancing the ball 50 yds. In some manner when Meyers was going through the line, Valparaiso's quarter back stole the ball, and made a 40 yd. run and a touch down. After this Valparaiso was not dangerous, our boys driving them from one end of the field to the other until they had scored 4 touch downs, failing each time to kick a goal. The features of the game were Washburn’s punt of 80 yds, the line bucking of Cain, Irwin, Collins and Manley, and the tackling of Irwin, Wood worth and Saylers. Behind the line we were very strong Marshall, Meyers, Brinley, and Washburn doing great work. Valparaiso put up a good game, but was unable to stop the hard line rushes of our backs. The line up was as follows:
