A Republican Victory in an Off Year
The elections returns of last week turned out much better for republicans than they promised at first. Gov. Shaw’s majority in lowa, instead of 12,000 is about 31,000, his total vote being the largest ever cast for a republican candidate for governor by 16,000. The republican majority in Ohio is about 26,000, and a republican U. S. Senator is assured. This is much better than in 1889, when that State elected a democratic governor by 10,000, after giving President Harrison 19,000 majority the year before. Another very gratifying result was the republican victory in Maryland, by which a republican will succeed Gorman in the U. S. Senate. In fact there was very little ground for the great display of democratic roosters made last week.
