Select Readings and Recitations

By Rev. C.D. Jeffries, Opera House, Tuesday, October 26th. Under the auspices of “The Ladies Industrial Society” of the Presbyterian church of Rensselaer Rev. C. D. Jeffries will give an entertainment consisting of recitations of poetical and prose selections chosen from Shakespear and other distinguished authors in Ellis’ opera house on the evening of Oct, 26th at 8 o’clock. He will be assisted by persons who will furnish vocal music. For a number of years before he entered upon the active work of the Christian Ministry Mr. Jeffries was a professional elocutionist. He has often given Readings in many of the largest churches and public halls of the cities of Allegheny and Pittsburg and in many places in Pennsylvania and Ohio. While he was a student in “The Western Theological Seminary,” which is next to the largest Seminary of the Presbyterian church in this country, he was the “Teacher of Elocution and Oratory” in the institution of learning, immediately after he graduated he opened a “School of Elocution and Oratory” in the “Curry Institute Building” on the corner of Penn avenue and Sixth street Pittsburgh which he conducted for one year, at the end of which year he took charge of a Mission church in Tecumseh Nebraska. Some of the best critics have said that Mr. Jeffries has few equals as a public reader. As he by his elocutionary talents has helped churches to obtain hundreds of dollars. It is sincerely hoped that the Opera House may Be filled on the night of Oct. 26th in order to assist “The Ladies Industrial Society.”
