Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 19, Number 7, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 28 September 1897 — The Old Settlers. [ARTICLE]
The Old Settlers.
Their Meeting Saturday Was a Great Success. The old settlers’ meeting here • V last Saturday was a very gratifying success, in all respects. A very large number of early settlers from Jasper, Newton and Benton counties were present, and the general attendance was also quite large. In the afternoon the crowd on the grounds must have numbered fully 1500 to 2000. There were quite too many there for all to hear the exercises at the stand, but these found amusement at the merry-go-round and various sideshows.
The following is believed to be a complete roster of all the early settlers or native born Jasperites, of 40 years or more residence, present at the meeting; also the names of all the older people present, whether of 40 years residence or less. Their names, places of residence, ages, places of birth, and time and places of settlement here, I are given. Rev. Isaac Sayler, of Rensselaer, aged 88, born in Pickaway Co., Ohio, here in 1850, settled at Blue Grass, was the oldest person present. His brother Jacob Sayler, 2 years older, lives in Newton Tp., but was not present. James Culp, of Rensselaer, 87 years, born in West Va., settled in Hanging Grove in 1851, was next in age.
The oldest native born Jasperite was John T. Culp, born in Barkley Tp, in 1836. Joseph Sparling was next oldest native present, born in Marion Tp., 1837, M. L. Spitler, the chief historian, says he had arranged to be born here in 1836, but about that time his parents went down into Warren Co,, where his father, the noted George W. Spitler fiad a winter’s engagement to teach readin, ritin, rithmetic and whalin, and M. L. was born before they returned the next spring. David Nowels, of Rensselaer, aged 76, born in Holmes Co., Ohio, was the oldest settler present, in length of residence, having come in 1834, James T. Randle and Franklin and Ransom Elijah came in 1835.
